This piece is about social media, but the argument could be applied as well to micro mobile technology. Why shouldn’t the public leverage its ultimate ownership of right-of-way against dominant MM companies for the public good? Going a bit further, if the city owned the wirelesss space these private companies ultimately rely on, what better arrangements could we make for the public good?

Lots of dialogue these days about impacts of social media. Larger issue may be how to deal with data-management and operational controls within a public civic space. The author says "Whoever is in charge will have massive power over the future of civic space and freedom of expression. Given the stakes, democratic governance seems essential."
