Dallas' renowned architect and urbanist Kevin Sloan hosted us at his Davis Street studio last night, then presented his principles of urban design at the lounge over the Kessler Theater. Kevin drew from his own illustrious body of work to demonstrate how the best examples of building and placemaking recognize a deep set of interactions among humans, nature and the built environment. Correctly and imaginatively applied, these patterns can result in what Sloan considers the greatest human accomplishment of all, the creation of city.
As an added treat, Sloan introduced several of his UTD architecture students and their creation: a board game that develops meta-thinking in collaborative design. The game, "re-draw" has been honored by the famed Biennale Venezia.
Thanks to Urban Design TF chair Dave Retzsch for arranging this, and to Paul Ridley and Robert Kent for hosting. Events like this help showcase the design/planning/engineering talent across our North Texas region, and the potential of this organization to help meet the challenges we face in coming decades.
